Teachers are in short supply in most areas, and many students are considering the merits of becoming a teacher. After all, there are certainly some terrific perks to having summers and long breaks at Christmas, but before you sign up for a teaching degree plan, consider all aspects of the degree – is it truly suited for you? Are You Teaching Material? Many would-be teachers pursue the degree so that they can have summers off and be on the same daily schedule as their children. While this is common enough, often the would-be teachers fail to realize what must happen between those summer breaks. Teaching is not as simple as it would appear from the outside looking in. As a student, you might remember your own teachers moving about the classroom, grading papers, taking large stacks of materials home, and otherwise constantly working. As a teacher, you're the boss of anywhere from 20 to 200 students on a daily basis who will make your job as challenging as possible. You prepare for them, lead them, guide them, give them examples, give them more examples, keep them on track and then clean up after them. If you're not ready for the work of becoming a teacher, select a degree that will land you a desk job somewhere – teaching is a calling, you earn the few weeks you have off in the summer. Of course, teachers are not necessarily born, they can be made. If you like the idea of being a teacher and changing lives, you're certainly in the right profession. As a teacher you have an impact on students every day. A word, a sentence, a look, a gesture can create a lasting memory for a student and you have the power to influence that child in a huge number of positive ways. Teaching is rewarding because you do witness change and success on the part of students, and there are few others ways to dramatically guide young people through the increasingly challenging world they live in today. Choosing Teaching If you've decided to follow a teaching career, spend as much time as you can watching and learning from experienced teachers. You'll learn many things in your coursework, but nothing can replace the experience and knowledge you'll gain from watching a kindergarten teacher arrange twenty squirming students into a silent line or listening to a powerful history teacher make learning fun for apathetic teens. Go into teaching for the right reasons and you'll become one of those powerful teachers you remember so well from your own past.
