A new degree or certificate can do a great deal to start you in a new career path or enhance the career you already have. Many individuals struggle, however, with the many options and degree plans available. Criminal justice is one of the more popular fields of study with good reason. Criminal Justice is Growing Unfortunately, even before the recession and poor economy made people desperate, crime was on the rise. There will always be criminals and there will always be a need for individuals to track, arrest, process and help convict those criminals. Working in criminal justice doesn't necessarily mean becoming a prison guard or police officer, although those are certainly options. A degree in criminal justice can open doorways into the highly technical forensic units, crime labs and tracking centers. You can work directly with criminals or work in a field that supports those who do. There is a growing need for specialized and well-trained workers in a variety of justice related fields. Everyone enjoys a career that is challenging and rewarding. Working in many fields within criminal justice are exactly that. Choose to work with teen offenders, for example, can pay off in huge dividends while you work to help these young people turn their lives around and seek out better opportunities. Working in a crime lab can give you the opportunity to focus on the minute and more obscure items of evidence on a daily basis. Criminal justice can be physically challenging in some regard. There are avenues for all sorts of personalities within criminal justice. Many who have a hard time in office cubes enjoy the open feel of police or prison work. Others enjoy the finite details of evidence and computer systems unique to the criminal justice systems. Criminal Justice is Rewarding Careers in criminal justice tend to be financially rewarding, but money isn't a motivating factor for all criminal justice employees. Many are more motivated by the intangible results that come from helping to change lives or protect the common good. Knowing that you've helped keep a murderer off the streets or given someone a new chance at life is powerful motivation to continue working in a field that has such life changing opportunities. Even support positions that don't actually handle criminals still are critical to the overall functioning of a police department, government agency or prison system. Knowing you're working as part of a system of change is rewarding as well. Those with a military background often consider criminal justice and especially becoming a police officer due to the similarities in the way the organizations are run and the nature of the work. It is no surprise that many government agents were once members of the military as well. You don't have to be military to enjoy a career in criminal justice, however. Many others enjoy the detail work of crime scene investigations and the satisfaction of working to improve their hometown, state and country.
