Is a Business Degree Right for You?

Business degrees are one of the most popular forms of college degrees sought by students. However, many of those students fail to realize the pitfalls that can come with a business degree. The image the degree in hand is followed by a terrific job in a tall tower with power lunches and a fat paycheck to boot. Unfortunately, for many seeking business degrees, this simply isn't the way things work out.

People in Offices Do Something
There are wonderful degree programs that fall under the business heading. Getting the right kind of business degree can be the catalyst you need to get a solid job and secure your future. A general business degree doesn't likely give you the skills to be an accountant. It doesn't qualify you to sit on a trade floor. It most likely gives you ideas about how to manage people and some business operations. Unfortunately there are very few companies that hire fresh grads to manage people that have been working there for years. Instead, companies promote someone who has been serving a role in the company to manage others. If your degree isn't teaching you to do something, you'll have a much harder time selling yourself to do anything – selling yourself short in the process.

The Business behind Business Degrees
Earning a college degree of any kind is a tremendous accomplishment. In addition to looking for a business program that offers you specific skills marketable in today's economy, you should also consider the weight your degree carries. And it is most often the name of the university on the degree that signifies if that piece of paper is a powerful one.

Of course there are terrific programs at every level, but when considering multiple choices for a business program, look at the businesses hiring from that school. The stronger the business school's reputation and connections with real businesses in the community, the better your chances are of using those connection for your own career benefit.
