From time to time, we will publish new articles pertaining to Online and Continuing Education. We hope these pieces will provide additional useful information and tips to you to help improve your understanding of the advantages of pursuing an online degree and how it may affect your lifestyle and career. Most now recognize that getting the right degree is more important than getting just any degree. For almost a decade the prevailing thought process was that getting any college degree would give you a solid future. Now, however, companies are much more selective in their hiring processes and are looking for specific skill sets. Getting the right degree plan or specialized training can mean everything to your future career. Choose Between Skills and Arts There is a distinction between most degree plans. Some are skill driven and others are more artistic and information driven. When you consider an engineering degree and a history degree, for example, it's easy to see how an engineering degree can be put to work, but it is a bit harder to see with a history degree. Employers feel the same way. A person who has learned a great many skills in school is simply more marketable. In a tough market, the right skill set can be the difference between getting a job and not – especially with so many other experienced workers looking for employment as well. Balance Money and Prestige There is a huge amount of networking and prestige in attending certain universities. Unfortunately, unless you have a scholarship, these universities and colleges are expensive. Many balance these costs by first attending a community or junior college and transferring into a more prominent school later. If you plan to take this route, be sure you follow a degree plan that is recognized by the university in questions. Your goal will likely be to finish your basic courses as quickly as possible and you certainly don't want to waste time on a class that won't help you in your goals. Maximize the Potential of Your University When attending school, there is more to the university or college than the classes. Use all of the resource available to you to improve your chances at future jobs and improved lifestyles. Joining student associations builds contacts you can use later. Career centers help you perfect your resumes and interviewing skills. Discount healthcare in the university health center can keep you healthy if you don't have insurance otherwise, as is the case with many students. Internships Are a Huge Advantage The job market is tight, but many companies are still actively seeking college interns for a semester or a summer. The internship opportunity can be a big bonus for students and employers. The employer has the opportunity to try out future employees in the real world environment while paying them far less than they will earn if they go on to become full employees. The student has the opportunity to earn a bit of money for tuition the following semester, but more importantly can network and demonstrate their skills to an employer looking to hire just a few select individuals.
