4 Degrees Ideal for Veterans

The increased GI Bill benefits available to military individuals ready to start coursework for a new career or to enhance their current one make it even easier to afford to be in a classroom working toward the program of their choosing. To make time in the classroom even more effective, veterans do well to choose programs they enjoy and that take advantage of existing skill sets.

Criminal Justice
Many veterans find themselves at home in criminal justice programs. These can be many different specific programs, but they deal primarily with different roles within the justice system. Criminal justice degrees can help veterans become highly paid police officers, corrections officers, or well suited for roles in government agencies such as Homeland Security, CIA or FBI where military experience is considered a huge advantage. Criminal justice can be almost generic or it can be very precise with new degrees appearing in many schools that deal with forensics and crime scene analysis. Crime is certainly a strong presence in the nation and those with disciplined minds and manners can find a great fit in these fields.

Engineering
There are few jobs in the military that don't require precision training and systems of organization. After working for years in grids, coordinates, building, and design, engineering is natural course for many veterans. The sense of discipline present in engineering degrees is certainly a draw as is the wide range of opportunities in the field. The risks and activities in the military can be hugely advantageous as well in certain fields of engineering such as those working on platforms or vessels where scuba diving might be a huge selling feature.

Associates Degrees in Skilled Labor
If you're ready to start a new career sooner rather than later, an associates degree in one of the many forms of skilled labor suits the requirements of the GI Bill as well as giving you the skills you need to get a job and start a well-paid career. The shortage of skilled laborers continues to grow and this is one of the areas that will be heavily affected by stimulus spending as it is such as recognized need. Associate programs considered by many veterans that take advantage of skills they have already acquired in the military are electrical, computer, plumbing, welding, automotive, HVAC or system programs.

Fire Fighting
Not one that springs to mind for many veterans, but the discipline and risky nature of the military work translates naturally to fire fighting. There are degree programs offered in many universities throughout the country that specialize in fire fighting and prevention. Not only would these programs train you to become a fire fighter in both urban and rural blazes, but you might also specialize in various forms of fire prevention and related systems. There is flexibility within the degree for the more technical aspects of the job, such as installing and maintaining sprinklers and alarms, and the more physical jobs such as wildfire fighting and prevention.
