From time to time, we will publish new articles pertaining to Online and Continuing Education. We hope these pieces will provide additional useful information and tips to you to help improve your understanding of the advantages of pursuing an online degree and how it may affect your lifestyle and career. When considering a college degree, many opt for a business program with the intention of using that degree to fit into just about any role within a company. While good in theory, the glaring problem with most business degrees is how general and generic they are. There are huge benefits to learning about functions within business and managerial techniques. But the greater benefit, especially in a tight marketplace, is learning something specific that is being sought by companies. Building Skill Sets Within the field of business, you typically find programs in accounting, finance, management, marketing and perhaps management information systems. Some business schools have other targeted programs as well such as international business. Many students in business schools opt for management because they want to prepare to be a manager someday or they prefer not to focus on one of the more technical programs. Looking forward, however, this can be a problem in getting hired out of school. But in accounting and finance, you're crunching numbers. You're learning how to make the numbers work in different functions and how to work specific systems such as the stock market, bonds, taxes and audits. These are skill sets a huge number of employers are looking for as employees have to have a great deal of training to learn the appropriate amount of information. Likewise, management information systems focuses on learning how to use various computer programs and technical business skills which is another much sought after skill set.
A few years ago any college degree was enough to get you started in a career track. Today, the degree you're selecting matters a great deal more. The more specific and marketable your degree is, the more likely you are to find a company in need of your skill set. Selling your knowledge and proficiency in accounting practices and tax regulations is much easier than selling your success with management theories or best marketing practices. Choosing your degree is a balancing act, however, between what you want to do and the best way to get there. If you hate numbers, choosing to pursue a degree in accounting won't be a personal success. There are still benefits in general business degrees, but pay attention in those marketing classes as you'll be doing a lot of selling to make yourself stand out in a crowded marketplace.
